Opera Theater

Opera is an art form which started in Italy in the 16th century. It’s usually performed in a theatrical setting. Singers and musicians combine in dramatic combinations. Singing is in speech-inflected styles and arias are a more melodic style in which notes are sung in a sustained fashion. Opera incorporates many of the elements of spoken theatre, such as acting, scenery, and costumes and sometimes includes dance. Performances are typically given in an opera house, accompanied by an orchestra or smaller musical ensemble usually led by a conductor.

Opera is still very popular today with the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in NYC being the top venue with regular sell outs. In Washington DC the Kennedy Center has top performances as well. The most famous singers like Enrico Caruso and Maria Callas are known to audiences all over the world. The Three Tenors” Pavoratti, Domingo and Carreras popularized opera and sold out shows throughout the 1990’s and up to 2006. In the last decade, some larger opera houses have begun to stream live performances in cinemas all over the world.
